My once-upon-a-time started in South London. I was born a few years after the second world war and grew up in a city dotted with bomb sites. By then backyard air-raid shelters had been converted into tool sheds and playhouses, but the wartime stories, memories and recipes were still very much a part of my home life.
After some globe-trotting years, my husband, Ray and my three amazing kids emigrated to Canada. Family grown, Ray, Piper, our rescue cat, and I now live in an eighty-year-old house with a wonderful view over Halifax Harbour, as you can see from the picture below.
I have an art college background, and as a mature student obtained a BA at Mount Saint Vincent University. For many years I worked in the Youth Services department of the Alderney Gate Library. As part of a creative programming team, I presented literary based programs in branches all over the Halifax Public Library system. It was the most fun job ever. I particularly loved the old-style Dartmouth Summer Reading Club where we got into long discussions with the kids about the books they were reading.
Despite my terrible punctuation, I have had nine books published. They are a mixture of fun picture books and junior historical fiction. I love the ocean which is probably why all but two of my books are stories about the sea and ships. I have been part of a talented writing group for over a decade and thoroughly recommend writers groups. The friendship, encouragement and fresh eyes are invaluable to making stories the best they can be. I am a member of the Writer’s Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) and love taking part in the “Writer’s in the Schools" program. (See contact page for details on how to invite me to visit your school or group.)
I am a member of “The Friends of McNabs Island Society,” and take part in the massive, annual, McNabs Island beach clean-up. I'm particularly interested in the terrible issue of plastics and ghost gear polluting the ocean and shoreline. During the summer months, I guide groups of visitors of all ages on interpretive hikes around the beautiful, storied Island. I am on the “Outdoor Education” committee tasked with the exciting project of developing adventure programs for youth on the island. Information on how to visit McNabs Island is on the contact page.
In my spare time I love...
